Preparation for Production: Choosing the Right Mate for Budgies

Matching of birds according to their age, health and physical characteristics, cage arrangement and the process of getting used to each other.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Spouse

Despite their monogamous nature, budgies can be selective in breeding. For a good match, both birds must be healthy individuals that are at least 10-12 months old (adult) and fully fledged.

Dating Process

Putting them directly in the same cage may lead to fights. Allow the birds to get to know each other by keeping them in two separate cages side by side for 1 week. When they show signs of baiting each other or kissing over the wire, throw the female into the male's cage. The breeding cage should always be the male's territory.

💡 Mutation Match

If there is a color mutation you are targeting (e.g. Albino), it is very important to calculate the carrier genes (split). You can see the possible offspring rates by using our Genetic Calculator before making a mating decision.
