Choosing Budgerigar Mates and Preparing for Breeding

Health and history

A breeding decision should not be based on appearance or colour alone. Consider each bird’s general health, diet, medical history, and pedigree; consult an avian veterinarian for a pre-breeding examination. Pet birds are not always reliably sexed by appearance, so a veterinarian can advise whether a suitable sexing method is needed. A single age or feathering threshold cannot replace an individual health assessment.

Introduce birds safely

Do not place unfamiliar birds directly in the same cage. Let them become accustomed to one another in separate secure spaces under supervision, and do not skip quarantine or health checks. There is no universal one-week introduction rule. Watch for chasing, biting, injury, or persistent avoidance; separate the birds and seek expert advice if these occur. Even a compatible pair needs appropriate space, a clean nesting setup, rest, and separate access to food and water. The breeding cage does not biologically have to be the male’s territory.

Genetic goals and welfare

If you have a colour goal, record known parental genotypes and uncertainty. “Split” applies to specific recessive inheritance models; it is inaccurate to call dominant or incompletely dominant mutations hidden carriers. A calculator’s probabilities depend on the entered genotypes and its bounded budgerigar model; they do not guarantee chick colours. Seek veterinary advice before pairing birds with close shared ancestry or a history of repeated laying or egg binding. Delaying or choosing not to breed is also a valid welfare decision.
