Why calcium matters
Calcium supports functions such as bone health and eggshell formation. A bird’s needs depend on age, health, breeding status, and its complete diet. Giving every budgie the same supplement at the same dose is not a safe rule. Start with a complete, balanced diet; a symptom alone cannot establish deficiency or excess.
Grit is not a mineral block
Grit consists of hard particles a bird swallows but cannot digest; it is not the same as a mineral block or cuttlebone. Budgies remove seed hulls and do not routinely need grit. Swallowing too much can risk digestive blockage. Do not add a grit dish automatically or treat marketing as evidence of medical need.
Choose supplements for the bird
If considering cuttlebone or another mineral product, discuss the ingredients and current diet with an avian veterinarian. Calcium drops, powders, human supplements, or several products together can create excess or an unbalanced diet. A laying hen may have particular needs, assessed in the context of her history and health.
When to call a veterinarian
Contact an avian veterinarian for eggshell concerns, weakness, appetite or droppings changes, repeated laying, or a marked behavior change. Bring food and supplement packaging if possible. This article gives context, not diagnosis, a grit recommendation, or a dose. See the cited veterinary guidance on routine grit and excessive intake.
