Incubation Process and Egg Tracking in Budgies

The most critical factors that need to be known during the incubation process to have a successful production period.

Pre-Incubation Preparation

The condition of the nest is very important before mating occurs and the female starts laying eggs. Sawdust or coarse sand placed in the nesting box will both balance the humidity and prevent the eggs from slipping (bow leg syndrome).

Ovulation Pattern

Female budgies usually lay eggs every other day (every 48 hours). A total of 4 to 8 eggs can be made. The female often incubates permanently after the 2nd or 3rd egg. In this way, a large day difference between the first litters is prevented.

💡 Tip: Egg Control

You can check whether the eggs are fertile (vascularized) with the help of a small flashlight 6-7 days after the first egg is laid. Fertilized eggs appear red and veined inside, while empty eggs appear yellow/transparent.

Incubation Time and Humidity

The incubation period is on average 18-21 days. During this period, keeping the humidity in the cage environment between 50% and 60% makes it easier for the hatchlings to hatch the eggs.

Tracking with BudgieBreedingTracker

Calculating the hatch date of each egg can be complicated. BudgieBreedingTracker Thanks to the Calendar feature of the application, when you enter the date of the first egg, all possible hatching dates are recorded in your calendar and automatic reminders are sent to you.
